Pinero /pnr/, Sir Arthur Wing (1855-1934), English dramatist and actor. He began writing for the stage in 1877, creating a series of comedies and farces, such as Dandy Dick (1887). From 1889 he embarked on a number of serious plays dealing with social issues, especially the double standards of morality for men and women (e.g. The Second Mrs Tanqueray, 1893)
Zworykin /zwrkn, zvrikn/, Vladimir (Kuzmich) (1889-1982), Russian-born American physicist and television pioneer. He invented an electronic television input device, which incorporated a screen scanned by an electron beam and sent an electric signal to a cathode-ray tube adapted to reproduce the image. This had been developed into the first practical television camera by about 1929. Zworykin continued to be involved in television development, introducing photomultipliers to make cameras more sensitive.
